Rammstein formed at the beginning of 1994 in East Germany. It started out as a side project for the members in the band but soon grew to be much more than that. The six members, (listed in order of joining) Richard Kruspe, Christoph Schneider, Oliver Riedel, Paul Landers, Flake Lorenz and Till Lindemann, soon left their bands and relationships to concentrate all their energy into Rammstein. The name Rammstein was taken from the name of a place in Germany in which a horrible accident occurred at an airshow. Rammstein also translates into "battering ram," which is a fairly good description of the music. The driving rhythms of the drums and the guitars and Till's powerful voice (singing in German) along with contrasting keyboard melodies give Rammstein a very distinctive sound.

Less than a year after forming, Rammstein released their debut album Herzeleid, which was recorded in Sweden. They toured extensively in support of the album and became immensely popular in Europe for their music and outrageous live show. A display of utter destruction complete with flame throwers and bondage scenes. Meanwhile Rammstein became known in America through the Lost Highway soundtrack which contained the songs "Heirate Mich" and "Rammstein."

In late 1996 Rammstein went to the island of Malta to record their second album Sehnsucht. This album was released in the US through Slash Records with two extra tracks which are English versions of "Engel" and "Du Hast." (They sound better in German)
